Just wanted to give you some good news about our program. On Thursday October 18, 2012, around 5:00PM the Sea Scouts and leaders of Ship 25 rescued four boaters whose small sailboat was in rough seas with high winds. There was, rain and thunder in the forecast for overnight and their motor had died. They were adrift on Cayuga Lake about four miles from the inlet being blown north into rougher seas. These were very freaked out people.
We were able to tow them back and get them safely to dock.
I understand from the people at the marina who I spoke to today that
these people are very inexperienced and might not have made it if we
hadn't been there. Seriously though, it was intense.

Scouts from six District troops attended our District Fall Camporee in Harford on October 12th-14th. The Scouts competed at four stations, and learned the basics of Search and Rescue techniques.

The District Fly-o-Ree on May 18-20, 2012, was a great success, and we'd like to express our thanks to all of the Scouters, EAA pilot members and East Hill Flying Club pilots who made it possible.
For the story of the Fly-o-Ree and more pictures, see this picture gallery page.

2011 District Award of Merit
On April 29th, many Taughannock District Scouters and Scouts received awards at our 2011 Scouting Awards Dinner. The awards included national training and performance awards (a/k/a knots) through local awards like the Sparkplug, Old Guard, Patriot Patrol, 76'ers and others. Two District Scouters - Sheldon Craig and Katrina Overton - were given the highest award a district can give, the District Award of Merit. Congratulations to all!

![]() The Founder's Award - a medal on a blue and red ribbon - was first given by Charles Newman, founder of Troop 4 in Ithaca in the 1920's. In recent years, the Taughannock District has given the Founder's Award to long-term Scouters. This year's award went to Jim Bugh, a 60-year veteran and long-time Scoutmaster of BOCES Troop 81 in Cortland. |
![]() The Patriot Patrol recognizes Scouters who have helped the Taughannock District over the last year. This year's Patriot was John Muir, father of our National Park system. |

And finally, why we're doing this in the first
place - our youth members. |
The District held its 2011 Mall Show at the Shops at Ithaca Mall on February 19th. There was a Pinewood Derby for Cubs, and various Packs and Troops and the new Sea Scout Ship all had displays to show the public about the World of Scouting. Also present were the Camp Barton Alumni Association, Duty to God Committee, a display on the Blair Atholl Jamborette and Scouting internationally, and a display by the Council.
