The SSS Spear, Ship 25, spent their Christmas 2012 holidays in Puerto Rico.
They sailed, explored caves and the rainforest, and visited the Areceibo Observatory.

Congratulations to Yvonne Plesnar on earning
Sea Scout Quartermaster - Venturing Silver - Venturing Ranger Award
November 10, 2012

One of Scouting's oldest programs, Sea Scouting is celebrating its 100th year in 2012, but it remains "Scouting's best kept secret". Sea Scout Ship 25 (SSS Spear) meeting at the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Ithaca, is one of only two Ships in the Baden-Powell Council.  Quartermaster is the highest rank in Sea Scouting - it is earned by only 20 Sea Scouts a year - so that, alone, would make Yvonne's achievement something special. Not to stop there, though, she also earned the Venturing Silver Award - the highest rank in Venturing - and also Venturing Ranger Award at the same time. All three awards were presented at a ceremony at the Dryden Fire Hall on Saturday, November 10, 2012, which was attended by the Sea Scouts of both Ship 25 and Ship 90, as well as a roomful of parents, Scouts and Scouters.

Sea Scouts rescued 4 stranded boaters
on Cayuga Lake in rough seas and high wind

Just wanted to give you some good news about our program.  On Thursday October 18, 2012, around 5:00PM the Sea Scouts and leaders of Ship 25 rescued four boaters whose small sailboat was in rough seas with high winds. There was, rain and thunder in the forecast for overnight and their motor had died.  They were adrift on Cayuga Lake about four miles from the inlet being blown north into rougher seas.  These were very freaked out people.

We were able to tow them back and get them  safely to dock.  I understand from the people at the marina who I  spoke to today that these people are very inexperienced and might not  have made it if we hadn't been there. Seriously though, it was  intense.

Jim Graney, Ship 25

Search and Rescue Fall Camporee

Scouts from six District troops attended our District Fall Camporee in Harford on October 12th-14th. The Scouts competed at four stations, and learned the basics of Search and Rescue techniques.

The Scouts did two practice searches, on in the afternoon and one at night.

After-action review - Mike Homrighaus goes over the search with the Scouts.

That's one rubber duckie rescued!

(Scouts + rocks + pond) = stone skipping
Of course. What else?

Congratulations to 2011 District Awards Recipients!

Sheldon Craig and Katrina Overton
2011 District Award of Merit

On April 29th, many Taughannock District Scouters and Scouts received awards at our 2011 Scouting Awards Dinner. The awards included national training and performance awards (a/k/a knots) through local awards like the Sparkplug, Old Guard, Patriot Patrol, 76'ers and others. Two District Scouters - Sheldon Craig and Katrina Overton - were given the highest award a district can give, the District Award of Merit. Congratulations to all!

Tom Sorenson and Will Newman give a training award to Chaz Stanton.

The Founder's Award - a medal on a blue and red ribbon - was first given by Charles Newman, founder of Troop 4 in Ithaca in the 1920's. In recent years, the Taughannock District has given the Founder's Award to long-term Scouters. This year's award went to Jim Bugh, a 60-year veteran and long-time Scoutmaster of BOCES Troop 81 in Cortland.

The Patriot Patrol recognizes Scouters who have helped the Taughannock District over the last year. This year's Patriot was John Muir, father of our National Park system.

Our MC for the dinner, Liam Murphy

It was a dinner, after all, and a good one at that...

We had a good representation by the Sea Scouts this year.

And finally, why we're doing this in the first place - our youth members.

District Cubs, Scouts, and Venturers
showed the World of Scouting at the Ithaca Mall

The District held its 2011 Mall Show at the Shops at Ithaca Mall on February 19th. There was a Pinewood Derby for Cubs, and various Packs and Troops and the new Sea Scout Ship all had displays to show the public about the World of Scouting. Also present were the Camp Barton Alumni Association, Duty to God Committee, a display on the Blair Atholl Jamborette and Scouting internationally, and a display by the Council.

Pack 24 had cubs and Scouts casting into a plastic tub... and potted plants... and the District Commissioner's back...
