Rank Patches

Scout

The original Scout Badge was just a joining badge. It did not become a rank until 2017.

Special Scout badge for 2010 100th Anniversary Year

Tenderfoot

When rank patches were introduced in the 1930's, they were embroidered on a cloth background with no edging. This form was used into the 1950's

Later, rank patches were on twill with a rolled edging. This form of badge was used from the 1950's until 1972

The "Improved Scouting Program" of 1972 introduced rank patches with colorful backgrounds.

By 1989, the colored backgrounds on all of the rank and position patches were thought to be too garish, so they were replaced by a tan background to match the uniform shirt. This is the special Tenderfoot patch used in 2010.

First Class

When Scouting first started, ranks were indicated by metal pins rather than patches. They were worn on the left sleeve. This pin dates to around 1915 - it belonged to Ed Little, who owned the Basket Shop in Dryden. He gave it to me in the late 1970's.

Skill Awards

The 1972 "Improved Scouting Program" introduced "Skill Awards", which were earned for advancement from Tenderfoot through First Class. They were supposed to provide "instant recognition" for the Scout, in between the major milestones of ranks. There were twelve skill awards, of which I have eleven in my collection - I'm missing "Sports".

Back to the Virtual Patch Collection main page

Lots of Scouts and Scouters collect patches - your Webmaster is no exception. So, I've put up a Virtual Patch Collection for the district. It's by no means exhaustive, but it's what I've got. If you felt like contributing pictures of some patches we don't yet have in the collection, please e-mail them to Mike Brown at wb2jwd@gmail.com - the scans should be between 450-600 pixels in width and height (no multi-megabyte scans, please, they crash my e-mail program) and in JPG or PNG format if possible. Of course, if you wanted to give me the actual patches, I won't insult you by refusing...
